TV Quiz Shows

In the 90s we have this quiz show on channel 9 shown every Saturday(or was it Sunday?) afternoon called Battle of the Brains. It has separate divisions for Grade School, High School and College. With that you know which schools are good. What nerds look like. We love watching that show and try to answer the questions also. That show was spoofed by a gag show and calls the segment "Battle of the Brainless". That segment is funny. The gag show ended in the late 90s but was resurrected again last year. I don’t know if the kids these days find the sketch funny and if they have any idea why the freakin title.

That show had a competition in Channel 7, The Digital LG Quiz Show. It was hosted by Regine Tolentino and Paolo Bediones. It was shown every Sunday morning. It was a good show and my high school joined with my classmate as the contestant. I think we reached the semifinals or something.

Quiz shows are good on TV. At least kids learn something useful in school. Today I don’t see any of these anymore. There was this asean quiz show but I don’t know if anybody ever saw that. I can’t remember if it is the same where the host says "UNI markers up!" just to give airtime for the marker sponsor.

So what kids are battling their whims for in national TV nowadays? Pinoy Henyo. Wow, these kids will do great on Office Christmas parties when they get old. They would win Starbucks GCs.

I saw this earlier on the MedicalCity TV.

I Hate January 2014

The month passed as if nothing. I don’t believe I accomplished anything, it was 31 days of nothing.

Last year I also hate January for the diseases. This year, the month just presents all the uncertainty the year is bringing, especially with work. Part of why I am not doing anything the whole month is because of this uncertainty.

I'm lifting you up
I'm letting you down
I'm dancing till dawn
I'm fooling around
I'm not giving up
I'm making your love
This city's made us crazy and we must get out

Pavements. Moving on. 31 days. I have to be doing something soon. My notebook has to be having notes now.
Priorities. I am such a procrastinator. In two weeks I am leaving for the US again
Bridges. Never burn them. Keep your friends close but your enemies closer. Thats the goddamn rule.

I-push

"the best friend".

It's complicated.

By and Down

I cannot stop listening to this song since this link was shared on their facebook page. The performance is is just awesome. I have been watching that clip the whole week last week.

Songs from A Perfect Circle are just divine. I have been listening to this band since college and it was cool that finally the band started making appearances and songs again. Puscifer is awesome as well. That side project explains well why side projects are important especially to the creativity of the musician. I love A Perfect Circle, it is in my favicon and also I remember our thesis paper and presentation had that logo in the background too.

By and Down is a new song. The lyrics is great. reminiscent of their early songs but mellow like the last release. It's just awesome. If I get a chance to be watch this band live, I gotta have to. The video alone shows how good it is to see them live.

Too bad the video on the page is now restricted on my location. fuck.

Kathryn Merteuil

I once again came across the term manic pixie dream girl because of this article which make me finally watch Ruby Sparks. Good indie movie. It is fresh but I got bored in the middle. Most manic pixie dream girl stories are written by men for obvious reason. This movie is written by the Zoe Kazan, the girl who also play the Ruby Sparks. The thing is, the archetype now boring. The girl is always cute lovable and is pain in the ass. All girls should be that way. Ruby Sparks in the movie is also considered a counterexample but I still think it’s the same banana.

This makes me remember my favorite villainess of all time, Kathryn Merteuil from Cruel Intentions. I like how her character and Sebastian Valmont are all seductive and cunning. The movie is based on the novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses. I went to its Wikipedia page before and saw the lists of its movie adaptations and I watched 3 of 6 in the list. It is of course the same plot but the period and country are different. It is always awesome even though I know the Valmont character will die . It just shows that the story fits any period and the characters are timeless.

Merteuil is in no way a manic pixie dream girl. No way some guy will fall head over heels in love with a girl like her. She is no way in the vicinity of the archetype and I believe, I never found another character like her.  I have read something about a character on Gossip Girl but I haven't seen that show. There are other seductresses in fiction I have read or seen. I specifically love Linda Fiorentino in "The Last Seduction". Merteuil never really seduces anyone in the movie. She just manipulates people and sometimes no seduction needed, just her wits.

To conclude, I can say the manic pixie dream girl and Kathryn Merteuil are two characters we love to hate. Well not really, I love Kathryn. It has been a dream since 1999 to meet a real-life person like her and see her in action ruining lives. Hahaha. I think we could be good friends.

Dealing with People

"The window of opportunity to go out and have fun and meet new people is getting smaller by the day" –Road Trip

My sister spent four days on a Camiguin-CDO trip with her Singapore housemate with the husband. A stupid part of her experience she shared to us is how the husband has poor people skills. As a guy, the husband NEVER offers to take photographs, eventhough they are couple, he must think of taking the task of the photographer once in a while. Ladies love photos, duh? He apparently also doesn’t like talking to other people. He only talks to his wife. He doesn’t offer to others the food he is munching. What a douche. It might have sucked because they went there as a group. That type of person can’t be brought to any climb or trek. The Bengal tiger on Life of Pi or Wilson on Castaway give better company.

I am an introvert but I think I have satisfactory social skills. I have 900 facebook friends and I personally know at least 95% of them. I could be friendly if I wanted to but I don’t keep a lot of them. I like keeping my circle small. I dont even have a solid barkada that I belong to. I sometimes see a get-together picture of a barkada that I used to hang-out with before on facebook. I am not included. No big deal hahaha. I only have 2 godkids from friends. They say that you lose half of your friends every seven years. I’ve around a lot of circles through the years and I think it is true though I can try to catch up with all the people I considered a friend if I want to.

I could be an asshole of the grandest kind too. In terms of Facebook friends, I have been "un-friended" a couple of times before and it is nothing to weep about. Hahaha.
"Keep your friends close but your enemies closer" – Sun Tzu

That phrase was used on "The Godfather part 2", "Cruel Intentions" and in one of the "Blade" movies of Wesley Snipes. I honestly believe in that saying. I practically live by it. It is not cool throwing a cold shoulder with someone you hate. It never wrong to be friendly even if it’s fake. I can fake a smile and be Hollywood. It’s just a matter of acting and compliments. People believe everything you tell them as long as it’s a compliment.

Tomorrow I am attending this birthday party where some guests we don’t get along well in the past. I don’t really have rough history with a lot of them but still, if some of their core persona sucks. Some presume that going to the event would be a plastic affair. I’m still going, I don’t care. It should be easy, just fake a smile. I just want to see the hostess again after three years.
The shit I learned from movies.
